Local on the extremely steep mid-slope of a 340-foot slope. Loose patches occur along a mesic chute on a northwest-facing, much broken granitic cliff. Rooting in carpets of Hylocomium splendens, Pleurozium schreberi, and Dicranum sp. mosses, and in thin soil over bedrock. Partial shade of Picea mariana, Betula papyrifera, Abies balsamea, Sorbus decora, and rarely Thuja occidentalis.
Additional associates in a very sparsely-vegetated herbaceous layer include Polypodium virginianum, Dryopteris fragrans, Maianthemum canadense, Vaccinium myrtilloides.
