Frequent in open conifer woodland on low (~20-foot) bedrock ridges north of Ball Club Creek, east of Trine Lake. Partial shade beneath patchy canopy of mature Picea mariana, and scattered smaller Abies balsamea. Shallow silty-clay over gently sloping diabase/gabbro. Trailing through thick moss and lichen mats (Dicranum, Polytrichum, Pleurozium, Cladina).
Associates in depauperate ground layer include Linnaea borealis, Diphasiastrum complanatum, D. tristachyum, Chimaphila umbellata, Maianthemum canadense, Gaultheria hispidula, Vaccinium angustifolium.
