Habitat:
Abundant in hundreds of acres of rocky upland on the west end of Davis Lake; part of a ~4,000-acre area recovering from an intense 2006 wildfire. Full sun (as the young trees are not yet as tall as these 3- to 4-foot tall plants). Often in shallow rocky soil over the gabbro bedrock (frequently exposed in this vicinity). Dense young regrowth is dominated by Betula papyrifera, B. cordifolia, Populus tremuloides, and Pinus banksiana.
