Habitat:
Loose to fairly dense patch of several hundred vertical shoots in level to gently sloping setting near the lake. Full sun to partial shade of scattered young Picea mariana and Betula cordifolia regenerating following an intense 1995 wildfire (in a mixed conifer woodland). Shallow silty soil over bedrock (gabbro outcrops occur nearby).

Associates include Rubus strigosus, Vaccinium angustifolium, Cornus canadensis, Maianthemum canadense, Epilobium angustifolium.
