Habitat: Occasional along the southwest shore of Tote Lake. Scattered clumps and loose patches in fairly moist gravelly, rocky areas in the upland / lakeshore ecotone ~10-30 feet from the lake; pioneering in spots exposed by the roots of wind-thrown trees. Additional clumps on silty organic hummocks near the lakeshore. Partial shade.

Associated Taxa: Associates include Thuja occidentalis seedlings, also Spinulum annotinum, Viola macloskeyi, Trientalis borealis, Lycopus uniflorus, Triadenum fraseri, Linnaea borealis, Gaultheria hispidula, Agrostis scabra, Calamagrostis canadensis.
