Habitat:
Occasional along the southwest shore of Tote Lake. Scattered clumps and loose patches in fairly moist gravelly, rocky areas in the upland / lakeshore ecotone ~10-30 feet from the lake; pioneering in spots exposed by the roots of wind-thrown trees. Additional clumps on silty organic hummocks near the lakeshore. Partial shade.

Associates include Thuja occidentalis seedlings, also Spinulum annotinum, Viola macloskeyi, Trientalis borealis, Lycopus uniflorus, Triadenum fraseri, Linnaea borealis, Gaultheria hispidula, Agrostis scabra, Calamagrostis canadensis.
