Common along the southwest shore of Tote Lake. Stoloniferous, forming loose patches in fairly moist gravelly / rocky areas in the upland / lakeshore ecotone ~10-30 feet from the lake; pioneering in spots exposed by the roots of wind-thrown trees. Also on silty organic hummocks near the lake. Partial shade.
Associates include Thuja occidentalis seedlings, also Gaultheria hispidula, Spinulum annotinum, Huperzia selago, Trientalis borealis, Lycopus uniflorus, Triadenum fraseri, Linnaea borealis, Calamagrostis canadensis, Agrostis scabra.
