Locally common, fairly dense patches along a small ravine on the gently sloping upper portion of 450-foot northeast-facing slope above the Lower Stump River north of Loft Lake. Patchy canopy, locally dominated by Fraxinus nigra, Betula papyrifera, and Abies balsamea. Tall and fairly dense understory dominated by Acer spicatum. Rocky loam with abundant earthworm castings. Mesic setting. Also sporadic downslope along steeper parts of the ravine.
Associates include Aster macrophyllus, Osmorhiza claytonii, Rubus pubescens, R. parviflorus, Athyrium angustum, Carex pedunculata, C. deweyana.
