Growing along a moist to wet, silty clay trail through surrounding young Fraxinus nigra and Populus tremuloides. Specimen is partially shaded and associating with Ranunculus acris, Cicuta maculata, Caltha palustris, Carex castanea, C. stipata, C. gracillima, Equisetum sylvaticum, E. arvense, Fragaria virginiana, and Rosa acicularis.
Flowering. Clavate bearded lateral petals and sepal auricles well developed.
