Locality: United States, Minnesota, Koochiching, Private island owned by the Camping and Education Foundation. Sometimes referred to as Deer Island. Located on the southern tip of Grassy Island in Rainy Lake's Tilson Bay. Access by boat by launching from Tilson Bay public water access on MN-11. Specimen is 1.1 km northeast from access. Ranier is the nearest town 9 km to the west.

Elevation: 348 meters (1141ft)
Habitat: Growing on the upper slope of a bedrock pine-oak woodland. Southern aspect is exposed and slope is 100%. Species associates include Cornus rugosa, Viburnum rafinesquianum, an Juniperus communis var. depressa. Pinus banksiana and Quercus ellipsoidalis form the tree stratum.
