Habitat: Aspen, paper birch canopy with dense understory of balsam fir. Lots of moss covered logs and moss on trees. Intact forest floor. Abrupt change between organic and mineral soil. Some cut stumps. Sparsely vegetated, but still some diversity where species occur. Lots of deer/hare browse on regenerating shrubs. One to two canopy gaps with denser forest floor. Balsam fir is dying.
Description: Common Associates: Maianthemum canadense, Populus tremuloides, and Dendrolycopodium dendroideum.
