Common in a fire-dependent forest community. Canopy is interrupted and dominated by Abies balsamea, Populus tremuloides, and Betula papyrifera. Subcanopy is moderately dense with Abies balsamea. Patchy to sparse shrub layer dominated by Corylus cornuta. Partial to full shade.
Sandy loam soil.
