Growing near the southwest shoreline of Smith Lake (ID 21001600), a 665 acre eutrophic basin situated in the Minnesota River Prairie Subsection. Growing singly but near a large, abundant stand of flowering and fruiting individuals in deeper water. Completely submerged in 15 centimeters of water.
Sand-silt substrate.
Associated with Heteranthera dubia, Najas flexilis, Ceratophyllum demersum, Potamogeton richardsonii, P. crispus.
