Habitat:
Infrequent to occasional on ~50-foot north- to northwest facing diabase cliff rising above the west end of Wedge Lake. Scattered small, loose to dense patches along crevices and on narrow ledges. Occurring here both in rather dry partially sunny spots and in shaded settings ranging from mesic to locally quite wet (lower ledge with groundwater seepage).

Associates include Huperzia selago, H. appalachiana, Dryopteris fragrans, Polypodium virginianum, Cystopteris fragilis, Trientalis borealis, Acer spicatum, Alnus viridis.
