Habitat:
Sporadic, uncommon to frequent in sand prairie / oak savanna remnant on stabilized dunes. Full sun to partial shade of Quercus macrocarpa and Juniperus virginiana. Tan sand. Level to gently-sloping settings (mostly south- and west-facing aspects).

Associates include Carex siccata, Schizachrium scoparium, Stipa spartea, Poa pratensis, Koeleria macrantha, Bouteloua hirsuta, Sporobolus cryptandrus, Geum triflorum, Anemone patens, Tradescantia bracteata, Rumex acetosella, Artemisia frigida, Ambrosia artemisiifolia, Selaginella rupestris.
