Habitat: Occasional on the lower half of a 20- to 60-foot, north- to northwest-facing, basalt cliff overlooking the southeast end of Rookie Pond. Small, loose to quite dense patches along crevices and in mossy mats of Polytrichum, Hylacomium, etc. on narrow ledges. Dry-mesic to mesic settings. Shaded by cliff aspect, by Acer spicatum, Thuja occidentalis, and Sorbus decora on the cliff, and by Betula papyrifera growing below.
Associated Species: Additional associates include Cystopteris fragilis, Polypodium virginianum, Dryopteris fragrans, Gymnocarpium dryopteris, Woodsia ilvensis, Aquilegia canadensis, Achillea millefolium, Campanula rotundifolia.
