Locality: United States, Minnesota, Lake, Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness; Along the Snowbank Hiking Trail in strongly rolling bedrock terrain on the northwest side of Snowbank Lake, 20 miles east-northeast of Ely.

Verbatim Elevation: 1450 feet
Habitat: Uncommon in mesic pine forest. Patchy to quite open canopy (trees leveled by 1999 windstorm) of young Abies balsamea, Betula papyrifera and Populus tremuloides, and occasional large Pinus banksiana and P. strobus. Tall dense shrub layer of Corylus cornuta, Cornus rugosa, and Acer spicatum. Rocky silty soil. Flowers bluish-purple. Specimen is 2/3 of largest plant in a small patch.
Associated Species: Additional associates include Aster macrophyllus, Aralia nudicaulis, Pteridium aquilinum, Rubus pubescens, R. parviflorus, Diervilla lonicera.
