Locality: United States, Minnesota, Lake, Rugged bedrock terrain south of the Fernberg Road, along the upper reaches of Madden Creek, 12 miles east-northeast of Ely.

Habitat: Uncommon on lower portion of very steep, 100-foot, north-facing slope on the south shore of Wedge Lake. Fairly dense clumps and small loose patches in shallow soil on broad, sloping diabase ledges and over talus. Partial shade of Pinus resinosa, Abies balsamea, Betula papyrifera, Acer spicatum, Alnus viridis. In mats of Pleurozium schreberi, Dicranum sp., and other mosses.
Associated Species: Associates include Carex foenea, Diervilla lonicera, Betula cordifolia, Rubus strigosus, Ribes glandulosum, Sorbus decora, Cornus canadensis, Polypodium virginianum.
