United States, Minnesota, St. Louis, Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness; On the banks of the Little Indian Sioux River north of the Echo Trail, 23 miles northwest of Ely. ~1/2-mile upstream from the mouth of Range Line Creek and just upstream from the portage trail landing.

Locally common, forming dense thickets on the river banks just below a long series of cascades. Partial shade beneath patchy canopy of Fraxinus pennsylvanica. Much-branched shrubs, to ~8 feet tall. Rocky silty substrate.
Additional associates include Viburnum lentago, Rubus strigosus, Acer saccharinum, Ulmus americana, Carex crinita, Glyceria striata, Brachyelytrum aristosum, Osmunda regalis, Eupatorium maculatum.
