Locality: United States, Minnesota, Lake, Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness; Rugged bedrock terrain north of Ensign Lake, 26 miles east-northeast of Ely, above the west end of Vera Lake.

Habitat: Upper portion of 120-foot bedrock ridge. Forming loose patches in thin soil over dry metasedimentary bedrock outcrops; gentle to fairly steep south-facing settings. Mostly in full sun, in area severely impacted by a 1999 windstorm. Low, branching shrubs, 12-40 inches tall.
Associated Species: Associates include Quercus macrocarpa, Diervilla lonicera, Symphoricarpos albus, Rosa acicularis, Viburnum rafinesquianum, Vaccinium myrtilloides, V. angustifolium, Heuchera richardsonii, Commandra umbellata, Clinopodium vulgare, Danthonia spicata, Agropyron trachycaulum.
