Habitat:
Mid- to upper south-facing slope of 120-foot bedrock ridge. Patchy canopy (1999 windstorm) of Populus tremuloides, with scattered Betula papyrifera, Quercus macrocarpa, and Pinus banksiana. Locally common in dense tall understory with Cornus rugosa, Viburnum rafinesquianum, Corylus cornuta, and Amelanchier spp. Shallow rocky silt over metasedimentary bedrock. Trees 12-20 feet tall, to 6 inches D.B.H.; with a gnarled, open-grown form and dead lower branches.
