Local on small granitic outcrops on bedrock ridge. Scattered clumps in thin dry organic detritus over bedrock. Full sun to partial shade of Pinus resinosa, P. strobus, and Populus grandidentata in the adjacent forest.
Associates include Cladina lichens, Apocynum androsaemifolium, Melampyrum lineare, Hieracium scabrum, Vaccinium angustifolium, Comptonia peregrina, Danthonia spicata, Dichanthelium xanthophysum.
