Locality: United States, Minnesota, Lake, Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness; Fairly rugged bedrock terrain northeast of Jackfish Lake, 18 miles north-northeast of Ely, along the drainage between Sash and Circle Lakes.

Habitat: Locally common in a small peatland. Habitat grades from rich to poor shrub fen to poor (scrub) black spruce swamp. Saturated peat. Nearly continuous Sphagnum carpets. Branching shrubs, to ~7 feet tall, often in dense patches. Mostly in full sun, in a zone dominated by Chamaedaphne calyculata with stunted spruce snags.
Associated Species: Additional associates include Kalmia polifolia, Ledum groenlandicum, Vaccinium oxycoccus, Picea mariana, Larix laricina, Alnus incana, Salix pedicellaris, Smilacina trifolia, Carex lacustris.
