Habitat:
Abundant in a small peatland. Habitat grades from rich to poor shrub fen to poor black spruce swamp. Saturated peat. Nearly continuous Sphagnum carpets. Low shrubs, mostly 2-3 feet tall. Forming the dominant ground cover in large areas. Full sun to partial shade of Picea mariana, Betula glandulifera, and Alnus incana.
