Habitat: Occasional to locally abundant in prairie / oak savanna on a large granite outcrop complex rising ~30 feet above the surrounding forested landscape. Forming small, dense patches in lichen and moss mats along margins of exposed bedrock. Level to gently-sloping, dry settings. Full sun to partial shade of small, open-grown Quercus macrocarpa and Q. ellipsoidalis.
Associated Species: Associates include Poa pratensis, P. compressa, Andropogon gerardii, Koeleria macrantha, Carex bicknellii, C. conoidea, Hedyotis longifolia, Cerastium arvense, Opuntia fragilis, Talinum parviflorum, Corydalis sempervirens, Woodsia ilvensis.
