Infrequent in prairie / oak savanna on a large granite outcrop complex rising ~30 feet above the surrounding forested landscape. In crevices and along margins of exposed bedrock. Level to gently-sloping, dry setting. Full sun to partial shade of small, open-grown Quercus macrocarpa and Q. ellipsoidalis.
Associates include Opuntia fragilis, Talinum parviflorum, Selaginella rupestris, Woodsia ilvensis, Cerastium arvense, Hedyotis longifolia, Andropogon gerardii, Poa pratensis, P. compressa, Koeleria macrantha, Carex bicknellii, C. conoidea.
