Habitat:
Occasional to abundant in sand prairie / oak savanna remnant on stabilized dunes. Full sun to partial shade of Quercus macrocarpa and Juniperus virginiana. Often forming dense patches in tan sand. Level to gently-sloping settings (mostly south- or west-facing aspects).

Associates include Carex inops ssp. heliophila, Stipa spartea, Schizachrium scoparium, Koeleria macrantha, Bouteloua hirsuta, Poa pratensis, Sporobolus cryptandrus, Anemone patens, Tradescantia bracteata, Geum triflorum, Rumex acetosella, Artemisia frigida, Selaginella rupestris.
