Habitat: Uncommon in sunny openings in jack pine woodland. Patchy canopy dominated by mature Pinus banksiana. Patchy to occasionally rather dense understory of Abies balsamea. Full sun to partial shade. Coarse tan sand with a shallow dark (loamy organic) upper layer. Growing singly or in small loose patches. Often in carpets of Pleurozium schreberi and Dicranum mosses.
Associated Species: Associates include Oryzopsis pungens, Schizachne purpurascens, Anemone quinquefolia, Viola conspersa, Polygala paucifolia, Galium triflorum, Diphasiastrum tristachyum.
