Habitat:
Uncommon and local in large cedar swamp northwest of Kemptons Lake. Patchy canopy dominated by Thuja occidentalis. Trees not overly large, often leaning in a haphazard fashion. Patchy understory of Abies balsamea, Thuja occidentalis, Fraxinus nigra, Alnus incana. Forming small, rather dense patches on hummocks. In carpets of Sphagnum spp. mosses. Partial shade. Female plants quite rare.

Associates include Carex leptalea, C. vaginata, Rubus pubescens, Coptis groenlandica, Trientalis borealis, Smilacina trifolia, Linnaea borealis, Cornus canadensis, Gaultheria hispidula, Ledum groenlandicum.
