Locality: United States, Minnesota, Lake, Rolling forested terrain south of the Fernberg Road, eight miles east-northeast of Ely.

Habitat: Rare and local in cedar swamp northwest of Kemptons Lake. Patchy canopy of Thuja occidentalis, with occasional Larix laricina, Fraxinus nigra. Cedars rather small, haphazardly leaning. Understory of Abies balsamea, Alnus incana, Fraxinus nigra, Thuja occidentalis. Carpets of Sphagnum mosses. Shaded setting. Branched (near base) shrubs, to ~36 inches tall; older stems browsed.
Associated Species: Associates include Lonicera oblongifolia, Ledum groenlandicum, Gaultheria hispidula, Linnaea borealis, Cornus canadensis, Coptis groenlandica, Trientalis borealis, Smilacina trifolia, Rubus pubescens, Ranunculus lapponicus, Carex leptalea.
