Locality: United States, Minnesota, Lake, Rugged bedrock terrain south of the Fernberg Road, along the upper reaches of Madden Creek, 12 miles east-northeast of Ely.

Habitat: Infrequent in the patchy understory, and into the interrupted canopy with Pinus strobus, P. banksiana, Populus tremuloides, Betula papyrifera, Abies balsamea, and Acer rubrum. Trees to ~12 inches D.B.H.
Associated Species: Additional associates include Cornus rugosa, Diervilla lonicera, Rhus glabra, Salix humilis, Vaccinium angustifolium, Schizachne purpurascens, Danthonia spicata, Oryzopsis pungens, O. asperifolia, Pteridium aquilinum, Polygonum cilinode, Aster macrophyllus, Aralia nudicaulis.
