Locality: United States, Minnesota, Lake, Rugged bedrock terrain south of the Fernberg Road, along the upper reaches of Madden Creek, 12 miles east-northeast of Ely.

Elevation: 463 meters Verbatim Elevation: 1520 feet

Habitat: Uncommon and local atop 100-foot ridge west of Wedge Lake. Loose patch of a few dozen stems near a large basalt (greenstone) outcrop. Patchy canopy of Populus tremuloides, with scattered Betula papyrifera, and very locally Quercus rubra and Populus grandidentata. Tall, dense understory of Populus tremuloides, P. grandidentata, Acer rubrum, Corylus cornuta, and Abies balsamea. Rocky loamy soil. Horizontal stems buried 2-4 inches deep.

Associated Taxa: Associates include Pteridium aquilinum, Aster macrophyllus, Commandra umbellata, Clintonia borealis, Aralia nudicaulis.
