Locality: United States, Minnesota, Lake, Rugged bedrock terrain south of the Fernberg Road, 12 miles east-northeast of Ely, along a two-track forest road leading to Madden Lake.

Habitat: Frequent on a ridge top basalt (greenstone) outcrop. Full sun to partial shade of young Populus tremuloides. Shallow loamy soil over bedrock. Low shrubs, to 24 inches tall. Loose patches.
Associated Species: Associates include Dichanthelium depauperatum, Danthonia spicata, Schizachne purpurascens, Poa compressa, Vaccinium angustifolium, Diervilla lonicera, Amelanchier spp., Arabis glabra, Hieracium aurantiacum, Fragaria virginiana, Achillea millefolium, Calystegia spithamea, Pteridium aquilinum.
