Habitat:
Locally abundant on a ridge top basalt (greenstone) outcrop. Full sun to partial shade of young Populus tremuloides. Shallow loamy soil over bedrock. Loose to dense patches.

Associates include Dichanthelium depauperatum, Danthonia spicata, Poa compressa, Schizachne purpurascens, Vaccinium angustifolium, Diervilla lonicera, Rhus glabra, Amelanchier spp., Arabis glabra, Fragaria virginiana, Achillea millefolium, Calystegia spithamea, Pteridium aquilinum.
