Locality: United States, Minnesota, Lake, Rugged bedrock terrain south of the Fernberg Road, 12 miles east-northeast of Ely, along a two-track forest road leading to Madden Lake.

Habitat: Local, occasional on a ridge top basalt (greenstone) outcrop. Full sun to partial shade of young Populus tremuloides. Forming small dense patches in very thin loamy soil and detritus over bedrock.
Associated Species: Associates include Dichanthelium depauperatum, Danthonia spicata, Schizachne purpurascens, Poa compressa, Vaccinium angustifolium, Rhus glabra, Amelanchier spp., Hieracium aurantiacum, Calystegia spithamea, and Cladina spp. and other lichens.
