Locality: United States, Minnesota, Lake, Rugged bedrock terrain south of the Fernberg Road, along Madden Creek 10 miles east-northeast of Ely.

Habitat: Sporadic, very locally common in cedar swamp south of the creek. Mostly in full shade under canopy of mature Thuja occidentalis. Forming fairly dense patches on hummocks along long-decayed tree boles and on other raised mesic microsites. Peat substrate, often in needle duff.
Associated Species: Associates include Carex interior, C. disperma, Glyceria striata, Smilacina trifolia, Coptis groenlandica, Trientalis borealis, Petasites palmatus, Rubus pubescens, Athyrium angustum, Gymnocarpium dryopteris, Rhamnus alnifolia.
