Habitat:
Sporadic, very locally common in cedar swamp south of the creek. Mostly in full shade under canopy of mature Thuja occidentalis. Forming fairly dense patches on hummocks along long-decayed tree boles and on other raised mesic microsites. Peat substrate, often in needle duff.

Associates include Carex interior, C. disperma, Glyceria striata, Smilacina trifolia, Coptis groenlandica, Trientalis borealis, Petasites palmatus, Rubus pubescens, Athyrium angustum, Gymnocarpium dryopteris, Rhamnus alnifolia.
