Habitat: Occasional atop bedrock ridge northeast of Hawks Nest Lake. Small loose patches on fairly large, gently-sloping granitic outcrops. Loose clumps in very thin soil in a subtle bedrock depression. Full sun much of the day; morning and evening shading from the adjacent woodland (Pinus banksiana, P. strobus, P. resinosa, Betula papyrifera, Populus grandidentata, Acer rubrum, Abies balsamea).
Associated Species: Associates include Cladina spp., Carex merritt-fernaldii, Danthonia spicata, Agrostis scabra, Potentilla norvegica, Vaccinium angustifolium, Comptonia peregrina, Rubus frondosus.
