Locality: United States, Minnesota, St. Louis, Rugged bedrock terrain in the White Hills west of Hawks Nest Lake, seven miles north-northeast of Ely.

Habitat: Occasional locally in young aspen-birch forest regenerating from clear cut logging ~15-20 years ago. Loose patches in forest on both sides of two-track road. Fairly dense and rather short canopy of Populus tremuloides and Betula papyrifera. Acer rubrum frequent in understory. Rocky, level to gently sloping, mesic setting. Fruiting individuals rare here.
Associated Species: Associates include Pyrola chlorantha, Trientalis borealis, Clintonia borealis, Aralia nudicaulis, Pteridium aquilinum, Corallorhiza maculata, Vaccinium angustifolium, Carex pedunculata.
