Habitat:
On the steep lower to mid-slope of a 150-foot ridge above a small bay. Occasional on northwest- to west-facing, metasedimentary cliffs (Knife Lake formation). Small and often dense patches along crevices of the interrupted and much-fractured cliffs that rise 30-80 feet. Dry-mesic to mesic, mostly shaded microsites on rock faces that are otherwise fairly dry. Plants vary from quite small in drier settings to rather robust in moister spots.

Associates include Dryopteris fragrans, Woodsia ilvensis, Cystopteris fragilis, Polypodium virginianum, Campanula rotundifolia, Poa glauca.
