Habitat:
Local, occasional on steep, 120-foot, southeast-facing, upper slope of a narrow bedrock ridge. Partial shade of Pinus resinosa and P. strobus in bedrock woodland above large shoreline cliffs. Thin soil and detritus over metasedimentary rock (Knife Lake group). Several small clumps here.

Associates include Carex backii, Danthonia spicata, Poa pratensis, Arabis pycnocarpa, Commandra umbellata, Aquilegia canadensis, Fragaria virginiana, Woodsia ilvensis, Symphoricarpos albus, Rosa acicularis, Amelanchier humilis, Cladina sp.
