Habitat:
Frequent. Scattered clumps and dense patches in a narrow zone at the lakeward edge of the upland forest. Thousands of plants in this vicinity. Mostly in partial shade; the collection site patch occurs in a sheltered cove and is shaded by Thuja occidentalis, Abies balsamea, Picea glauca, Betula papyrifera, Fraxinus pennsylvanica, and Alnus incana. Silty soil amongst rocks and small boulders.

Additional associates include Myrica gale, Spiraea alba, Euthamia graminifolia, Calamagrostis canadensis.
