Habitat: Infrequent on the narrow valley bottom between steep 200-foot bluffs. Rich mesic hardwood forest. Canopy of Tilia americana, Ulmus americana, U. thomasii, Fraxinus nigra, Acer saccharum, and Prunus serotina. Understory of Ulmus americana, U. thomasii, Carpinus caroliniana, Viburnum lentago, and Ostrya virginiana. Small dense patches. Silty-clay.
Associated Species: Associates include Carex blanda, C. jamesii, C. cephaloidea, C. sparganioides, Hydrophyllum virginianum, Isopyrum biternatum, Laportea canadensis, Ranunculus recurvatus, Rudbeckia laciniata, Erythronium albidum, , Blephilia hirsuta.
