Infrequent to occasional in cedar swamp. Patchy canopy dominated by Thuja occidentalis, with occasional Larix laricina, Picea mariana, and Fraxinus nigra. Patchy understory of Fraxinus nigra, Abies balsamea, and Alnus incana. Partial shade. Deep moist peat. Typically on hummocks, in carpets of Sphagnum and feathermosses. Large clumps, often in small, loose patches.
Additional associates include Carex interior, C. disperma, C. magellanica, Coptis trifolia, Rubus pubescens, Cornus canadensis, Osmunda cinnamomea, Cypripedium reginae, Ledum groenlandicum.
