Habitat: Local, scattered plants. Partial shade of Abies balsamea and Betula papyrifera in a bedrock woodland where the canopy was mostly leveled by a major wind storm in 1999. Shallow rocky soil over metasedimentary bedrock (Knife Lake group). Level to sloping settings.
Associated Species: Associates include Pteridium aquilinum, Aster macrophyllus, Shepherdia canadensis, Juniperus communis, Amelanchier humilis, Diervilla lonicera, Pinus strobus, Lonicera canadensis, L. dioica, Ribes oxyacanthoides, Cornus rugosa, C. stolonifera.
