Locally common in a small ravine between bedrock ridges. Young mesic forest recovering from extensive windthrow (July 4, 1999 storm). Partial sun to full shade beneath dense, young canopy of Abies balsamea and Populus tremuloides, with scattered P. balsamifera and Pinus strobus. Understory of Abies balsamea and Acer spicatum. Moist rocky silt. Level to gently-sloping settings. Loose to dense patches.
Associates include Linnaea borealis, Streptopus roseus, Mitella nuda, Cornus canadensis, Aralia nudicaulis, Rubus pubescens, R. parviflorus.
