United States, Minnesota, Lake, Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness; Rolling bedrock terrain along the Four Mile Portage between Fall and Basswood Lakes, 10 miles northeast of Ely. Local on the southeastern shore of Muskeg Lake.

Occasional loose clumps on the lake shore, in wet sand a few inches above water level. Full sun to partially shaded by Myrica gale which forms a dense narrow band along the upland margin.
Additional associates include Eleocharis palustris, Dulichium arundinaceum, Carex cryptolepis, Phragmites australis, Potentilla norvegica, Triadenum fraseri, Juncus brevicaudatus, J. effusus.
