Habitat: Infrequent in cedar swamp. Patchy canopy dominated by Thuja occidentalis, with scattered Fraxinus nigra. Patchy understory of Fraxinus nigra, Abies balsamea, Thuja occidentalis, and Alnus incana. On mossy hummocks. Moist peat. Mostly in full shade. Sprawling, low, heavily-browsed shrubs, rarely taller than 18 inches.
Associated Species: Additional associates include Ledum groenlandicum, Lonicera canadensis, Linnaea borealis, Rubus pubescens, Gymnocarpium dryopteris, Huperzia lucidula, Mitella nuda, Coptis trifolia, Thelypteris phegopteris, Carex interior, C. leptalea, C. trisperma.
