Local. Small, loose to dense patch in shallow water (2-4 feet deep). Thousands of plants in a several square meter area. Substrate is coarse sand and gravel with a shallow mucky-silt cap, amongst scattered cobbles and small boulders.
Associates include Eriocaulon aquaticum, Isoetes echinospora, Littorella uniflora, Lobelia dortmanna, Myriophyllum tenellum.
