United States, Minnesota, Lake, Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness; Fairly rugged bedrock terrain south of Basswood Lake, 15 miles northeast of Ely; above the portage trail connecting Wind Bay to Wind Lake.

Habitat:
Locally common on the crest and upper portion of a steep, 120-foot, south-facing slope. Forming the dominant tree cover in a ~5-acre patch of oak woodland and bedrock savanna. Mostly rather small and gnarly multi-stemmed trees (5-25 feet tall, 2-12 inches D.B.H.), many of them snapped off by July 1999 windstorm. Shallow soil over amphibolitic schist (Vermilion Granite Complex), and on the margins of outcrops.
Associated Species:
Associates include Populus grandidentata, Corylus cornuta, Cornus rugosa, Symphoricarpos albus, Toxicodendron rydbergii.
