Habitat:
Locally common on the crest and upper portion of a steep, 120-foot, south-facing slope. Forming the dominant tree cover in a ~5-acre patch of oak woodland and bedrock savanna. Mostly rather small and gnarly multi-stemmed trees (5-25 feet tall, 2-12 inches D.B.H.), many of them snapped off by July 1999 windstorm. Shallow soil over amphibolitic schist (Vermilion Granite Complex), and on the margins of outcrops.

Associates include Populus grandidentata, Corylus cornuta, Cornus rugosa, Symphoricarpos albus, Toxicodendron rydbergii.
