United States, Minnesota, Lake, Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness; Fairly rugged bedrock terrain between Wind and Moose Lakes, 16 miles northeast of Ely; east of a small (8-acre) bog pond south of Washte Lake.

Habitat:
Occasional in a fairly rich forested peatland. Partial sun to full shade. Patchy canopy (1999 windthrow) of Larix laricina, Thuja occidentalis, Picea mariana, and Betula papyrifera. Dense understory of Alnus incana, Cornus stolonifera, and Abies balsamea. Low shrubs, to 4 feet tall, and flowering only in sunny settings.

Additional associates include Rubus pubescens, Campanula aparinoides, Smilacina trifolia, Osmunda cinnamomea, Dryopteris cristata, Athyrium angustum, Carex stricta, C. leptalea, Ledum groenlandicum.
