Locality: United States, Minnesota, Lake, Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness; Rugged bedrock terrain on the south side of Newfound Lake, 20 miles east-northeast of Ely.

Habitat: Local atop dry metasedimentary cliffs (Knife Lake formation), at the crest of the extremely steep, southeast-facing slope of the 160-foot ridge above Thermal Lake. Forming small dense patches in dry and thin detritus over sloping bedrock. Also occurs on the upper ledges of the cliff. Full sun to partial shade of Pinus banksiana and P. resinosa.
Associated Species: Associates include Cladina lichens, Rhus glabra, Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, Dichanthelium linearifolium, Solidago hispida, Fragaria virginiana, Prunus virginiana, Rosa acicularis, Amelanchier humilis.
